British Gas Help the Aged Partnership

Posted under Appliances

Let’s be honest, there are few things more miserable than being cold in your own property. It’s very difficult to lead a full and fulfilling life when the heating is off and the radiators are stone cold.

And for some people, it’s only the one bar on the fire that keeps them alive. The television news often has images of the country’s older citizens smothered in blankets and desperately trying to keep the chill out.

Dick Strawbridge of BBC’s It Ain’t Easy Being Green fame recently said on TV that a room has to be at 14C to be regarded as comfortable, whereas a warm room should be at 19C. Now, 14C might come as something as a surprise, because that it not very comfortable at all for most people. Indeed, occasionally heated rooms in a House which turns the heating off during the day can touch 9C when the outside gets cold, and that’s pretty chilly. Indeed, for pensioners and children, the temperature should be at least 21C, if not 24C, in harsh external conditions.

When your body gets older, your metabolism usually slows and with that your internal heating system is not so efficient as when you were a bouncing teenage. So for many of the elderly, the recent high energy prices on top of a long spate of really cold weather, has thrown a huge spanner into the works.

And this is where The British Gas Help the Aged Partnership comes in, with the aim of helping pensioners beat the threat, ever-growing, of fuel poverty.

They have produced a free pack which has been created to help older people make full use of their incomes through the maximum take-up of available benefits and the exploitation of energy efficiency techniques.

The pack contains three main elements: Check; Claim; and, Insulate.

To get a copy of the winter pack, you can download it from here, or complete the online order form, or telephone 0800 089 0800.

To start with, check that your are receiving all the benefits to which you are entitled and that you are up-to-speed with all the latest energy efficient techniques.

There are a number of organisations out there to help you with this, including The Pension Service on 0800 99 1234, or try www.helptheaged.org.uk, or www.direct.gov.uk.

You can also contact your Citizens Advice Bureau. If you’re worried about debts and what effect it might have on your situation, get hold of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service on 0800 138 111, or the National Debtline on 0808 808 4000.

Secondly, make sure you claim for what you are entitled. No-one is going to judge you, or criticise you, for making use of the all the benefits out there.

Thirdly, carry out the necessary insulation if you feel that your property is lacking some of the main ways of keeping the chill at bay. Just insulating your loft properly can save you in the region of £200 a year. But don’t forget cavity wall insulating, which can also make a big impact.

Also, take time to understand your heating controls, including your thermostat and timer controls, allowing you to warm up the house before you get up for example. Make sure your central hearting system has been serviced and if operating efficiently. And is your hot water tank insulated against heat loss – it should have a nice thick padded jacket to keep it hot.

Are your windows protected against draughts? If you don’t have double glazing, which can be an expensive option, you could always purchase a DIY alternative which includes a plastic film. Think about if your curtains fit properly and if they drop over the room’s radiator, make sure you can tuck them behind, so that the heat is allowed into the room.

Consider where draughts might be getting into the house. Feel under the doors and consider placing extruders around to help keep the chill out and the heat in.

For more tips on heating and grants, call 0800 952 0600 if you live in England for the Warm Front initiative and 0800 316 2815 in Wales, or go on www.energysavingtrust.org.uk.

And make sure you keep warm as well as your property. Check windows and doors at night to help keep heat in; make sure you get regular hot drinks and meals; dress properly for the conditions (put away the Bermuda shorts and get the sweaters out); moving about will help increase your circulation and help your warmth; and, just make sure you’re doing your bit by keeping your energy consumption down by switching off unnecessary appliances and also turning the lights off when not needed.

And one final thing: read a book about somewhere hot and exciting, and imagine yourself there. It might just help.

Notes

Check you are getting regular hot meals and hot drinks

as they provide warmth and energy.

Check you keep moving Any activity, even vacuuming,

will improve circulation.

Check you dress appropriately – day and night.

Wrap up warmly, indoors and out, ideally with several layers

of thin clothing to trap the heat.

Check you are keeping your fuel bills down:

• switch the lights off when you leave the room

• turn off appliances rather than leaving them on standby

• don’t overfill the kettle – boil only what you need

• replace standard light bulbs with energy-saving ones

• turn down the washing machine to 30°

• consider having a shower instead of a bath as this usesless hot water and therefore saves on heating costs.

What is This Carbon Footprint Everyone’s Talking About?

Posted under Appliances

The Department of Energy actually has a calculator to tell you how much greenhouse gases you produce on a daily basis.

WHAT IS A CARBON FOOTPRINT? The amount of greenHouse gas you generate by an activity or process. In other words, what impact you make on the environment measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide (C02). This calculator, compliments of the Department of Energy, can be found at http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/emissions/ind_calculator.html and lets you calculate your own carbon footprint. How much greenhouse gas do you produce while going through your daily activities such as driving, electricity use, and heating your home?

WHAT EXACTLY ARE GREENHOUSE GASES? Bottom line: Without Greenhouse Gases to maintain Earth’s temperature, it would be too cold for habitation. We need Greenhouse Gases but…we’re tromping heavily with our carbon footprint boots and that’s making the temperature too warm. Hence, the Greenhouse Effect mutates into Global Warming and that’s taken us from “We really should consider renewable energy” to “We MUST implement renewable energy NOW”.

CARBON DIOXIDE IS A GAS SO IT’S HARD TO WRAP MY HEAD AROUND METRIC “TONS” OF CO2…HOW MUCH IS THAT REALLY? The tonnage doesn’t really matter as much as what you can do to reduce that weight. The average homeowner who drives to work, comes home each evening to a household of four, and flies once a year on vacation has an average carbon footprint of 17 tons of C02. That’s not counting what you breathe out…that’s the just excess CO2 you’re using that, multiplied by millions, contributes to Global Warming.

On the flip side, by taking simple steps like changing your light bulbs, driving 10% less, buying Energy Star appliances, you can cut your personal damage from 17 to 7 tons…and that’s not even counting installing solar panels on your house or business!

By taking that additional solar step, you not only zero out your own personal carbon footprint but you create a SOLAR FOOTPRINT, which lessens the damaging effects of others. Then you are not only serving as a role model for others, but you’re negating their damage until they take responsibility for their own footprint.

TRANSFORM YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT INTO A SOLAR FOOTPRINT. If you own your own home, take advantage of the tax and other incentives available and install a Solar System on your own roof. Even if you rent, you can still be a powerful Solar Champion by urging your local businesses and schools to seriously consider taking their Renewable Energy efforts to the next level.

It can be done. It’s already begun. One footprint at a time.

Microwaves Ovens: Serve Fast and Quick Food

Posted under Appliances

<!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

Percy Spencer was the man who discovered the microwave. The first food to be cooked with Spencer’s microwave was popcorn and the second was an egg. But nowadays, maximum number of kitchen users use microwaves because they are cheaper than the LPG gas and works fast.

Microwave Oven and Oven Grill are generally used for save time in both industrial applications such as restaurants and at home. People who want fast cooking times also can use microwave ovens to prepare food or reheat stored food in only a moments. Popcorn is one of the popular items with the microwave users.

There are three types and sizes of microwave ovens :

1. Compact microwave: A compact microwave also called portable, small, is the smallest type of typically available consumer microwave. These ovens are rated between 500 and 1000 watts of power and usually have a capacity of 28 litres. These ovens are generally used for reheating food and making microwaves meals and popcorn.

2. Medium capacity microwave: These microwaves are larger than the compact or portable microwaves. Their interiors are between 30 and 45 litres and the power consumed range from 1000-1500 watts. It is the standard “family” sized microwave.

3. Large capacity microwave: It is big type microwave designed for cooking large meals. Large capacity microwave normally use over 2000 watts and usually has a capacity of 60 litres.

There are many social and cultural changes that come with microwave. The Microwave Oven has made it simple for people to cook and reduce the time needed for preparing and cooking food. It is no longer necessary to plan a lot of time for preparing lunch and dinner, since food could be heated in a matter of few minutes. As a result, there was a desire for easy and fast food preparing, that led to a behavioral change in people not wanting to spend more time in the kitchen.

Always use good quality Cooking appliances for use in microwaves because internal temperature is very high and low quality plates and the bowls can be damaged by dehydration.

Saving to Survive the Credit Crunch

Posted under Appliances

Many things are starting to bite as the global economic recession sets in. In these times of economic difficulties, it pays to be vigilant about your finances. The best way to get a grip on your finances and start saving money is to know what you’re doing with it.

1. Draw up a budget:

You will need to pin down the amount of money coming in and money going out. It should be easy to figure out how much money is coming in. You’re likely to have more difficulty with the outgoings.

The ultimate objective in working out a budget is for you to have a surplus, that is, to spend less money than you make in a month. Unless you generate a surplus each month, it will be difficult to get ahead financially. Any small amount will help: saving money as little as $10 a day on lunch at work gives you $50 a week which mushrooms into $2,400 over a 48-week working year.

You will need to know where you are actually spending your money to have an idea of cost items you can cut down or cut out altogether. List down everything; hide nothing; and be ruthless in cost-cutting.

2. Save:

If you normally spend less than your monthly income, saving money would just come naturally. The rule of thumb is to target saving at least one-tenth of your monthly earnings. Assuming you are able to do that, it will not be enough to just place the money in your transaction savings account. Look around for a savings account that offers higher interest yields.

3. Reduce energy consumption:

Energy bills amount to approximately $1,500 a year for the typical Household. Energy for heating your home can easily account for one-half of your power bills during winter, while hot water costs constitute about one-fourth.

Saving money on energy is not difficult to achieve. Applicances that are fitted with special energy saving technology will cut your power consumption. But there are small corrections you can do that add up to big savings.

You can save about $100 a year by making sure the TV, computer, and other appliances are turned off when not in use. Putting these appliances into standby mode is not the same as turning them off completely. Over the course of a year leaving items such as your TV and other electronics on standby could account for around 10% of your power bill.

You’ll be saving money if you find ways to trap heat inside the house in winter. For instance, making sure doors get shut, windows are properly sealed, and bare floors are covered can help. You could save as much as $200 a year by ensuring proper insulation on your ceilings, walls, and floors.

4. Compare energy costs:

As well as using appliances less and turning them off you should look to cut your bills further by comparing gas and electricity energy plans available in your area. Comparison websites can help you evaluate plans and prices, while electricity retailers publish online guides on energy consumption and estimated running costs of various appliances.

You need some patience in comparing prices because many variables are involved. The comparison websites provide many tools to assist you in this regard. It is useful to remember that the most expensive rate in your area is likely to be the default tariff.

5. Avoid unnecessary fees:

It is good to keep a sharp eye on your checking and savings accounts, loans, and other items which can be subject to bank fees and charges. An overdraft on your accounts will automatically cost you $30 in over-limit fees per transaction; sometimes, a penalty fee is charged. The easiest way to avoid these charges is to keep a cloise eye on your accounts and ensure they hold sufficient funds. Look around for low-fee or no-fee accounts on offer from some banks.

The Lure of Garden Gazebos

Posted under Appliances

There was a time when garden gazebos were only available to those who could afford to spend an extravagant amount of money. Gazebos have not only become affordable, the styles are varied and widely available. No matter what size area you have to devote to your gazebo building project, you can find the perfect size and style gazebo that will fit your personal landscape needs.

Before selecting the garden gazebo that is right for you, there are a few things you must consider carefully. What is the main purpose of your gazebo? Will you be using it for a sheltered hot tub or spa area? Garden gazebos can make a lavish centerpiece for a specialty garden, an outdoor cooking or grilling area or just a quiet place to sit with a cup of coffee and watch birds, or simply relax and view your garden. For centuries, gazebos have been used as viewing shelters, teahouses, pavilions, pagodas, summerhouses or kiosks.

You can decide what the design of your garden gazebo will be like. If you enjoy cooking outside and do a lot of outdoor entertaining, you may want to install a personalized fire pit or brick barbecue. If you decide to place your garden gazebo near your pool area, why not consider special lighting, an entertainment center or privacy screening, adding doors or windows and turning your gazebo into a guest changing area or pool House.

Once you choose the site of your gazebo the fun begins. Will you add electricity and plumbing? How about ornamental fountains or adding a fish pond or birdbath? Before choosing your spot be sure and keep in mind the seasonal advantages and drawbacks for the area you have chosen. Do you have high winds in the summer, or heavy amounts of snow in winter? What type of landscaping will you choose ? Will you use plants, vines, shrubs or trees to accent the area? All of these things need to be considered before choosing your gazebo.

Gazebos can be constructed from many types of natural cedars and pines and there are many styles available using vinyl or other synthetic materials. The styles are varied and no matter if you choose an old fashioned Victorian style, a gazebo with Greek or Asian influence or a simple rustic country style, be sure and consider the unlimited availability of accessories for your gazebo. You get to pick and choose what type of space to create, choosing your favorite roof design, decks, specialized lighting, stairs, railing, doors or gates, built in or freestanding furniture, outdoor cooking appliances, arbors, trellises, ponds, wishing wells, footbridges, wooden arbors, even personalized stone pathways.

Because of the popularity of gazebos, you are now able to personalize and design your garden gazebo in any way you desire. Whether buying a garden gazebo do-it-yourself kit or having your gazebo constructed by a professional, be sure and use your imagination when planning your personal garden gazebo get-a-way. Also keep in mind if you have enough space in your garden area, why limit yourself to just one?

Caring For The Elderly – Fitting Into The Role Of A Caregiver

Posted under Appliances

There is a belief that if your parents do not pass away at a young age, you will be fortunate to see them age and get the opportunity to provide them help in their old age. Very soon, as their needs and dependency increases, the occasional help may gradually change to a full fledged role of a caregiver. In some instances, the role of a caregiver comes on suddenly. This happens with the death of one parent and the widowed parent requires help and moral support to cope with the loss. For couples who have been married for decades, the sudden loss of a partner and companion is devastating and is akin to the loss of a limb. This is when your role as a caregiver is brought upon you very suddenly, and you have to look after the elderly parent’s many needs.

It is always easier to move into the role of caregiver gradually, so that all the concerned persons involved, have the time to get used to the idea. Wherever possible, it is advisable to make changes in the living environment of your aged parents, so that they feel safe and comfortable in their living quarters. This may help to delay the time when they become totally dependent on you. Some things that may go a long way to help in this direction are detailed below:

• Create the living quarters on one level. Stairways are a danger to the elderly and it is easier on them to have everything handy at the lower level. You can adapt the plans to include the living room, bedroom, kitchen, pantry and laundry room at the ground level.
• Reduce the daily chores to the minimum possible, so that the elders are not tied up with this activity. Make arrangements for home delivery of groceries and food items. Arrange for a daily cleaning service for house cleaning, and someone to come and handle minor repairs and odd jobs around the House. This will take off the pressures of daily running of the household.
• A weekly visit by a medical professional can also be arranged, to monitor their health, keep an eye on their prescriptions and assist with any other medical requirement.
• It is a good idea to reorganize the kitchen arrangements, so that they are easily accessible to the elderly. For example, the shelves can be placed at eye level to store items of daily use. Appliances like the microwave and toaster should be placed in an easily accessible location.
• Keeping their physical conditions in mind, make the house easy to use for your parents. You can install walking and grab bars along the hall or passageways and in the bathrooms where they may require additional support. Take care to have sufficient lighting in all the areas, so that there is good visibility.
• There can be an arrangement of emergency pull ropes in all rooms so that they can just pull on them to call for help in case of an emergency. These types of mechanisms are used in assisted care units, which may prove quite convenient for your aged parents to call for help in case the need arises.

By making some planned arrangements, one can make the living areas convenient, safe and comfortable for the elderly parents. This may allow them to retain their independence and help to postpone their move to a retirement home or a nursing home and also allow you to gradually ease into the role of a caregiver.
