How important is your landscape to you?

I am getting in to that saturated landscape market and I am trying to get an idea of how badly people want to have a gorgeous landscape. I know there are alot of ma and pop landscapers out there so I am wondering if there was a new company built with people that had a true professional landscape background, some even with horticulture degrees, would people pay what it really costs to have a sustainable water saving beautiful landscape?

your right it is a oversold market. However, lawn cutting and maintenance services seem to be in high demand. More people working longer hours and have less time to maintain their lawn. I don't see much landscaping going on here, it is mostly maintaining the current lawn and landscape. Keep in mind most places this is a seasonal service.

How should I separate my small garden from my grass?

No experience with gardening!! I just bought a House with a small (4' x 3') garden in the backyard. Right now the garden is empty but I hope to get some flowers & bushes in soon. Do I need to separate the garden from the surrounding grass with some sort of barrier so they don't grow into each other? Or will the roots of the plants keep each other from overgrowing? Secondly, I am looking for a hardy ground-covering type plant that grows with minimal care and perhaps has some nice flowers. Any suggestions?

If it was me I'd want to put in a barrier to prevent the grass from constantly encroaching on the garden. The ditch and landscape timbers can work, but more effective barriers would be:

1) tear off the sod around the garden spot (about a foot width) and a little deeper than just the sod. Then line with plastic (heavy duty plastic garbage bags work just fine, make sure to do a good job of overlapping the plastic. Then fill with rock…I find that works really well for many years

2) find a good edging… find something that will go down into the ground about 8inches. Don't get the 4" stuff…it's just not enough. Find any kind of edging or material that will let you put a wall down into the ground about 8" and that should prevent things from going into your garden.

As another poster said, 4' x 3' is a very small garden…you will not be able to do much with it. Most plants get big fast! icon smile How should I separate my small garden from my grass?

Have fun!

How to fix sloped floors on a top floor condo?

I have a top floor condo that has sloped floors. Is there a way to fix this issue? The floors are all Hardwood. What I want to know is if I were to buy new hardwood and some how build shims under it, could this fix my problem. Otherwise any other suggestions? Also, I don't know if I can get to the Joists due to the fact that I would be bothering my neighbor below.

This would be a very difficult task for the do-it-yourselfer. Normally, the floors are removed and the joists are "sistered" to the correct level, then the subfloor is reinstalled. You could try shimming a new subfloor on top of the existing subfloor, but your going to run into issues with your doors, thresholds, etc. You also werent specific to sq footage. If you are just doing one room, or the whole condo makes a difference in how you tackle this.

What is the difference between industrial design and product design?

I'm a prospective art/design school student and have been looking through catalogs and websites of various colleges. I've noticed some of these schools offer industrial design degrees, others product design degrees, and a few have both. I think I might want to try product design, but I'm not really sure as to what industrial design is and whether or not that's actually what I'm looking for. Can someone tell me what the difference between these two majors are? Examples of jobs that each would have would also be helpful.

They would mean the same thing in many schools, just like you could study "graphic design" at one school and "visual communications" at another. But industrial design is actually a broader field, where you could potentially design products, machinery, cars, etc. Product design is usually focused more toward consumer products, electronics, etc. but not necessarily only that.

Basically both are looking at defining a need and creating a three-dimensional answer. It might be an issue of surface styling for an existing product or it might be conceiving a whole new item that doesn't exist. Good design and drawing skills are important. Having ability with math, geometry, etc. is important too.

There is a great website: www.idsa.org

Their resource section has good information about this profession that should help answer your questions. Good luck! It's an interesting field of study.
